Developing and Sustaining Effective Interpersonal Process Groups

Group therapy is often misunderstood by our clients as well as our colleagues. In this interactive workshop we will de-mystify the process of starting a group in your practice by exploring such topics as client selection, pre-group interviews, the early stages of group as well as innovative marketing strategies. There will be a demonstration group illustrating a brand-new group as well as a role-play of the pre-group interview.
The structure of this workshop is:
- 60 minutes: Didactic/discussion
- 30 minutes: Role play of pre-group interview
- 15 minutes: Debriefing of role play
- 45 minutes: Didactic/discussion
- 60 minutes: Demonstration group
- 15 minutes: Debriefing of Demo group
- 15 minutes: Q & A / final discussion
- Describe a client who may not be appropriate for group therapy.
- Name two essential components of pre-group interviews.
- Differentiate between a first-stage group and a more seasoned group.
- List two effective examples of marketing a new group.
A CE certificate is issued for a $20 charge. Instructions for purchasing CE certificates will be emailed once registration is completed and certificates are issued after the workshop is completed. Continuing Education Certificates must be purchased within thirty (30) days of the event.
Psychologists: The Insight Center is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Insight Center maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This course is provides 4 CE units.
MFTs / LCSWs / LPCCs: The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts APA CEs. This course provides 4 CE units.
Andrew Susskind is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Somatic Experiencing and Brainspotting Practitioner and Certified Group Psychotherapist based in West Los Angeles since 1992. He serves as faculty for the Principles of Group Psychotherapy Course and has mentored associates in his private practice since 1997. His recent book, It’s Not About the Sex: Moving from Isolation to Intimacy after Sexual Addiction (Central Recovery Press, June 2019) joins his workbook, From Now On: Seven Keys to Purposeful Recovery which was released in 2014.
