Mindfulness and Anxiety Group Goals:

  • To develop the basics of a mindfulness meditation practice;
  • To increase capacity for emotional regulation;
  • To increase capacity for somatic awareness (awareness of bodily sensations);
  • To express their widest range of feelings and thoughts, and to explore their emotional and somatic experience;
  • To actively engage problems, concerns and challenges that motivate group participation;
  • To put feelings into words, not actions, and express them skillfully to group members;
  • To receive and give feedback appropriately;
  • To enhance each participant’s capacity to express empathy while honoring our own needs and experience.

Mindfulness and Anxiety Group Guidelines:

  1. Confidentiality is essential for safety and security within our group. Members will

treat matters that occur in the group with utmost confidentiality. What is discussed in the

group should remain in the group. This is the basis for a safe and secure environment in

which group members may express their thoughts and feelings.

2. The commitment to participate is the entire seven sessions. The first four weeks are

critical for the work we do in the last three weeks.

3. Regular and timely attendance at all sessions is expected. Members agree to be

present each week, to arrive on time, and remain throughout the entire meeting. If you

cannot attend a particular meeting, please leave a message for me by phone at 310-261-

5618 or by email at michael@michaelshiffman.com.

4. Relationships. Members agree to use relationships made in the group therapeutically

and not socially during the seven group sessions. If participants should meet each other

outside the group, such contact should be brought back and shared in the group.

5. This is a hybrid group combining skill development and personal processing.

Participating in a group can be anxiety provoking. Please share any concerns you have

about the group to make your needs known.

6. Group Distractions. Eating or using devices are not permitted during the group. Please

don’t email or text during the group. Beverages are allowed. There is no break during

the 90 minutes so please plan accordingly.

7. Alcohol and Drugs. Please refrain from consumption of any alcohol or recreational

drugs prior to group meetings. Please do not vape or smoke during group.

8. Group Fees. Payment of fees is due prior to the start of the first group session.
