Most of us were taught that gender and sexual orientation were binary – boys and girls, masculine and feminine. We now know that  gender is fluid and exists on a spectrum.  This creates confusion for therapists and challenges for our clients.  Learning the current terminology, and understanding “the gender spectrum,” supports our comfort and increases our sensitivity to gender-related issues more generally.

Understanding the treatment needs and concerns of the transgender community is a complex task.  Many trans people are afraid to embrace their true gender due to social and familial consequences. While we have entered a new age when the need for trans people to remain in the shadows is changing, our understanding of the issues remains underdeveloped.

In this workshop we will explore ways to provide effective support, guidance and information to transgender clients, their family, friends and co-workers. Learn what you need to know in order to be helpful to the transgender client as well as deepen your capacity to address gender-related issues.  Discover the richness and diversity within the transgender population and what to do if you become the first person a transgender client comes out to.

The instructors:

Casey Weitzman, LMFT is the Founder/Director of Gender Wellness of Los Angeles and has been a licensed marriage and family therapist for almost 25 years.  She counsels children and adults who are exploring gender identity and/or sexual orientation issues. In addition to working one-on-one with clients, she often works with their support systems, including their partner, spouse, parents, employer or friends.

Casey is an active member of WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health), The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT).

Casey’s clients — and her own life experience — have shown her that people often do not pursue what they want because they feel unworthy. Yet, there is still a desire to fit in and be accepted by peers as well as society at-large. The first step is self-acceptance. It is important for therapists to create a safe and nurturing environment to help clients on their journey to live fully in self-discovery. This process involves working together to uncover negative beliefs clients have about themselves. Casey encourages clients to embrace themselves and release self-judgment, so that their pathway opens for them to make more self-honoring choices and to realize their own possibilities. Casey can be reached at caseymft@genwell.org

Grace O’Connor, AMFT is working under the supervision of Casey Weitzman at Gender Wellness of Los Angeles.  Grace has her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, completed her training at the Colors LGBTQ Youth Counseling Center and is a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.

Grace currently works as a primary therapist/intake specialist/group facilitator at Core Melrose Recovery where she uses a combination of styles including 12-Step, Mindfulness/Meditation, LGBTQ+ Affirmative, Relational, Somatic, CBT and Family Systems.  Grace worked as a primary therapist/group facilitator at Pride Recovery LA where she was able to apply her more than 20 years of 12-step recovery to helping LGBTQ+ people struggling with addiction.

Grace works with transgender people of all ages and feels there is real value in taking what she has learned as a transgender-identified person and bringing it into her relationship with clients to build bonds of trust, security and healing.  Grace can be reached at grace@genwell.org

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
