The theory that addiction stems from attachment ruptures informs how this workshop will explore the reparative factors of group therapy. Addiction crosses all sexual and gender orientations as well as socio-economic status and cultural/ethnic backgrounds. The themes of emotional sobriety, shame, nervous system regulation and narcissism will be addressed.
The structure of this workshop is:
- 90 minutes as a didactic presentation intermixed with interactive discussion
- 45 minutes as a demo group
- 15 minutes debriefing
- 45 minutes as a demo group
- 45 minutes debriefing and Q & A
Objectives:
- Describe the correlation between trauma and addiction.
- Distinguish among the primary attachment styles.
- Explain how group therapy helps those in addiction recovery develop more secure attachments.
- List three examples of emotional sobriety.
