Safe Trauma Therapy
with

Babette Rothschild, LCSW

September 9-12, 2016
December 2-5, 2016
February 3-6, 2017

Each day is 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

This comprehensive 12-day training is delivered in three four-day parts. Registration for the full training is required.  Safe trauma therapy is grounded in the belief that the therapist working with trauma must become familiar with many theories, techniques, and treatment models to ensure that therapy will always be tailored to the needs of the client. It is designed to enhance, not replace, skills and knowledge already held by the participants. Practitioners from the widest range of theoretical perspectives and mental health disciplines have found this training to be a strong complement to their existing practice.

This training embraces three major goals:

  1. To make a relevant bridge between trauma theory and trauma practice;
  2. To make non-touch somatic tools available to the trauma practitioner;
  3. To equip therapists to distinguish and help clients who are not good candidates for processing trauma memories and those who can.

These goals underlie the principles addressed in The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment, putting into direct practice the tools presented there as well as many others.  We will review a range of theories of PTSD including those developed by: Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Herman and Peter Levine.

Training Overview:

Part 1:  Reducing risks of trauma therapy is the focus of this workshop and the foundation of the entire training.

Theoretical material includes: psychology of stress and trauma – including the role of dissociation; physiology of stress and trauma – including how brain and nervous system communicate during and following traumatic events; defining types of trauma clients; “putting on the brakes” for containment, and safety, and regulating hyperarousal. Experience with basic body awareness, muscle toning, boundaries, and the use of resources will provide the basis for direct practice during the remainder of the training.

Required reading:  The Body Remembers–The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment; The Body Remembers CASEBOOK–Unifying Methods and Models in the Treatment of Trauma and PTSD. The Body Remembers should be read prior to the start of part 1.

Part 2:  Theory and technique of therapeutic treatment will be the focus of this workshop.

Both cognitive and somatic sides of transference and countertransference will be explored. Memory theory will be presented as it applies to traumatic memory. In groups of three, participants will begin practicing Peter Levine’s SIBAM dissociation model as a multifaceted tool that can be used to enhance resolution of trauma. Participants will also be encouraged to use the theory they have learned to develop their own techniques.

Required reading:  Two books by Peter Levine should be reviewed before the start of part two:  Waking the Tiger and In an Unspoken Voice.

Part 3:  Integration of both theoretical and practical material from all three workshops will be the focus, reinforcing the bridge between theory and practice.

Issues involved when trauma therapy is the sole aim of treatment, as well as when it is a part of long-term psychotherapy, will be addressed. The Bodynamic ‘running technique’ will be introduced as an imaginal, mind/body integrative procedure for reawakening the flight reflex and reducing hyperarousal. Participants will be supervised in making relevant choices of techniques both during role-plays and during client consultation.
